Contribution of Engineers to Fight Against COVID-19.

     Now the day's world is facing an outbreak of a pandemic. The whole world is affected by the consequences caused by COVID-19. It badly affects public health and the economy of the nation, to survive in this critical situation we must have to stand together and fight against this deadly virus. To get out of this situation we have to follow some safety measures and for that public awareness is a must.
         As we are lucky enough that various sectors showing their active participation and giving helping hands to help us. The technical sector is one of the examples of a group of peoples who started doing various social welfare activities in terms of technology.

IIT Guwahati showing its keen participation to fight against COVID-19

         Various departments from IIT Guwahati started researching in their respective fields and areas. Out of which Mechanical, Electrical, Bioscience and Bioengineering plays an important role in developing scientific equipment for diagnosis and safety. It is also in the process of preparing 5000 sanitizer bottles for Govt. Medical College and Hospital Assam. 
           Diagnostic tools like PCR machines are provided for GMCH Assam. Two real-time PCR machines are provided to GMCH. These machines had a capacity of 1000 samples per 12 Hours and 2000 samples for 24 hours.

 Contribution of Various Fields:

Mechanical and Electronics Department: 

           An interesting thing is that engineers from the mechanical and electronics dept are developing several state-of-the-art technologies. They are developing the Robot-based drug/food carrying units to work in isolation wards and robot-based screening systems. They are contributing to producing large and high capacity Autoclave Machines, handheld temperature measuring devices, hospital beds, ventilators, medical waste disposal techniques, and WHO specified masks and hand sanitizers.

Bioengineering and Bioscience: 

      These fields of engineering and science taking tremendous efforts in developing protective gears with anti-viral and superhydrophobic coatings. They also work on developing biodegradable plastic-based medical textiles. 

Design and Development:

           This field of engineering works on developing a prototype 3D printed full face shield, including headgear which can be scaled up immediately. The development of friendly infrastructure for hospitals is also going on. 

            Prof. T. G. Sitharam director IIT Guwahati said, “Our idea is to make this state of the art facility for Northeast region. This center in the future would help to develop highly competent manpower for the diagnosis of different infectious diseases in the early stage of infection and thus its prevention too. There is no approved drug present for this disease. Faculty members are developing small molecule inhibitors for the treatment of COVID-19. The idea is to develop safe and affordable drugs for this disease. The institute has been working to educate the community as large on practicing social distancing and hygiene to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

AI Based X-Ray For Diagnosis of COVID-19

The world is facing the global crisis of pandemic. In this situation health care facilities facing problems like staff shortages and overwhelming patient loads. Intense increment in loads of patients tends to work on for compensation of lack, this leads to finding the methods which help the Fastrack diagnosis process.  Researchers from various fields working on developing the methods and devices which help to Fastrack and accurate the diagnosis process.             Approval of the research depends on the accuracy of results and ease of use.
